Dr. Joseph P. Missal

Dr. Missal is Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Oklahoma State University. In this capacity, he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band and guides all aspects of the OSU Band Program. Dr. Missal also directs the graduate conducting program, teaches undergraduate conducting, and serves as Chairman of the Wind and Percussion Division. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Music Education from Michigan State University, a Master of Music in Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Wind Ensemble/Band Conducting from the University of Colorado.
His ensembles have performed for conventions of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (San Luis Obispo, California 1999, Schladming, Austria 1997), the College Band Directors National Association (National Convention Denton, Texas 2001, Boulder, Colorado 1995), National Band Association, the Sonneck Society, Kappa Kappa Psi/Tau Beta Sigma, Oklahoma Music Educators Association, the Percussive Arts Society, and the Western States Collegiate Wind Band Festival. He has received praise from composers David Maslanka, Karel Husa, Dan Welcher, Cindy McTee, David Gillingham, James Fry, Micheal Daugherty, Frank Ticheli, Shafer Mahoney, Stephen Rush, and others for his expressive interpretations of their music. Former conducting students now hold high school, college and professional conducting positions throughout the United States.
A member of CBDNA, WASBE, MENC, Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, he appears as a guest conductor throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Israel. His writing has been published in the CBDNA Journal and the Canadian Band Journal and the GIA Teaching Music through Performance in Band. Dr. Missal is a Past President of the Southwest Division of the College Band Directors National Association and the Big Twelve Band Directors Association. In 1989, he was selected for the "Outstanding Recent Graduate Award" by the University of Colorado Alumni Association.
