History Snippets

Snippet #12 - "Districts", taken from the May 1947 issue of The Baton.

Steve Nelson:  "What follows is the first mention of districts that I could find in The Baton/Podium.  Malinda Matney, MWD Governor, had asked me some questions about governors, so this article piqued my interest.  I hope that you find it interesting too.  Check out the list of people who served as the first district counselors (the term governor came a little later...)  Some key people there!"

District Counselors

The Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity is divided into eleven geographical areas which are know as "Districts".

Each district is under the jurisdiction of a District Counselor.  The purpose of this arrangement is to give those areas an opportunity to organize and hold district meetings between the regular convention dates. This arrangement was started a few years before the war and several districts held district meetings and went so far as to hold district intercollegiate band concerts.

The convention approved the list of district counselors submitted by the Grand Council which are as follows:

District No. 1 - Capt. H.L. Beard, Corvallis, Oregon.
District No. 2 - Herman Zeimer, Fullerton, California
District No. 3 - J. Lee Burke, Jal, New Mexico (Past Grand President)
District No. 4 - John E. Howard, Grand Forks, North Dakota
District No. 5 - Leonard Hauge, Norman, Oklahoma
District No. 6 - Col. George Hurt, Austin, Texas
District No. 7 - W.D. Revelli, Ann Arbor, Michigan (!!!)
District No. 8 - Lyman Wiltse, Tampa, Florida
District No. 9 - Raymond Shannon, New York, New York (Charter Member)
District No. 10 - B.R. McGregor, Morgantown, West Virginia
District No. 11 - W.A. Scroggs, San Diego, California (Founder, Charter Member)
