Snippet #19 - "The Mothers Club of Alpha Pi", taken from the May 1949 issue of The Baton.

Steve Nelson:  "Ever wonder what went on before there were alumni associations?  Have a look at this truly unique part of the Fraternity that is practically forgotten!  This is taken from the May, 1949 issue of The Baton."

THE MOTHER'S CLUB OF ALPHA PI CHAPTER - TULSA UNIVERSITY

One of the most unique organizations to be found in Kappa Kappa Psi is the "Mother's Club" of Alpha Pi Chapter at Tulsa University.  This club is composed of mothers living in Tulsa whose sons are in the Tulsa University band.  It was organized in the early days of the chapter's history, in 1938, and has functioned in an active manner ever since its organization.  Some eighty-two mothers are members of this club.

The purpose of the club is to assist the Kappa Kappa Psi chapter in all of its activities and to give recognition to services which the fraternity renders the band.  These mothers meet regularly each month, sometimes two or three times during a month, depending on the objective at hand.

The Mother's Club acts as hostess when the Tulsa University has its annual band-day festival during the fall semester and these mothers serve coffee and sandwiches to all of the visitors of the band and festival.  Another activity of the Mother's Club is the annual chapter banquet given in honor of the new members after they have been initiated into the fraternity.  This is one of the crowning events of the year.  At the banquet this year several alumni were present for the banquet through the efforts of these mothers.

When the Oklahoma A. and M. College Band accompanied the football team to Tulsa last fall, the Mother's Club served the Aggie Band with coffee and sandwiches during the game.  The presence of the Mothers of the Tulsa Kappa Kappa Psi chapter at these various events indicate an interest in the fraternity seldom seen by the members.

The Mother's Club has also secured material and made robes for the Alpha Pi Chapter to be used in its initiation services.  They have done many things such as giving dinners, receptions and socials for visiting bands and Kappa Kappa Psi members.  During the war, Alpha Pi Chapter was one of the five chapters in the fraternity to continue active, and it was through the efforts of the Mother's Club that this was possible.  When the number was small, the going rather difficult and the interest low, the club rallied to the support of the chapter and kept interest going in order to keep the chapter alive.  The many loving cups and trophies won by the Alpha Pi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi at Tulsa University has been largely due to the interest and support of this club.  It has been a guiding influence, a helpful factor and strength to the chapter and when the history of Alpha Pi Chapter is written, the Mother's Club will be given a permanent place for it has served and assisted every member of Alpha Pi Chapter.  Each member takes pride in telling visitors about their Mother's Club and what it has done for them and their chapter.
