History Snippets

Snippet #21 - "Loan Fund for Needy Students", taken from Boh Makovsky's scrapbook, 1943.

Steve Nelson:  "This is taken from a newspaper article from Boh's scrapbook. No date was given for the article, but it appears to come from the 1943 portion of the scrapbook, judging from the other articles around it. This was about the time that Boh retired from his active teaching duties at OAMC.

Can you imagine a music educator so popular around your state that your band would raise money for a loan fund?  Perhaps this will serve as another small glimpse into who Boh was and what he meant to those who knew him."

LOAN FUND FOR NEEDY STUDENTS TO BEAR BOH MAKOVSKY'S NAME
Money To Be Raised by Means of "Boh Days" in Schools Throughout State

A Boh Makovsky loan fund for worthy and needy students is to be created by the Oklahoma Music Educators' Association.  Money from the "Boh Fund" will be available to music majors in any approved college in Oklahoma.

Money for the fund is to be raised by means of a "Boh Day" on May 7 in high school and college music departments throughout the state.  On this day, music departments will present pay programs, the proceeds of which will be sent to the treasurer of the Music Educator's Association which will administer the fund.

Loans will be made to music majors, both instrumental and vocal, upon recommendation of college officials and after investigation by those administering the Boh Fund.

The proposed fund for music majors is being called "The Boh Loan Fund" because the educators feel that "Boh is the daddy of school music in Oklahoma."

A similar fund, called the Boh Makovsky Loan Fund, has been in operation since 1939 for the benefit of A. and M. students majoring or minoring in music.
