Salsa fever
continues to sweep across the state as Oklahoma State
University's Latin Dancing and Cultural Club hosts its 9th
Annual Salsa Ball on November 15th from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.
in the OSU Student Union Ballroom on the Stillwater campus.
"The Salsa Ball
is an opportunity unlike anything else in Stillwater. Every
level of dancer, from beginner to advanced, can come to
listen to a good live band and dance in an elegant
atmosphere," said Chelsea Weber, OSU student and Salsa Ball
2008 coordinator.
Salsa Ball 2008
will feature Son Venezuela, hailing from Kansas City. Son
Venezuela also played at this May's Latin street festival,
Calle Ocho, in Stillwater.
In 2005, the
student-produced gala drew a crowd of more than 600 from
Oklahoma and surrounding states. Free lessons will be given
from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. for those wanting to learn the basics
of salsa or for those who simply want a refresher.
"It's a chance to
get dressed up and have a night of affordable fun and
dancing," Weber said.
Tickets for the
formal event will be on sale at the door for $10. Formal
dress is required, so no khakis, jeans, or tennis shoes will
be allowed.
The Salsa Ball
was founded in 2000 when fellow LDCC officers C. J. Garcia
Co and Roshini Nambiar conceived the idea to produce an
event giving Oklahomans the opportunity to experience the
salsa atmosphere found in bigger cities such as Miami, Los
Angeles and New York.
The power of
music and dance, along with the Latin folklore and people,
is celebrated by the members of LDCC. LDCC's mission is to
increase students' awareness of Latin American culture by
organizing events designed to accomplish this goal.
LDCC has gained
increased popularity and has become the brand name for Latin
American culture in and outside of OSU. In addition to
offering free lessons to the Stillwater community every
Saturday, LDCC performs in a variety of events, not only at
OSU but also with different organizations in Oklahoma.
